Cargill™ Barrier Coating

Cargill™ Barrier Coating solutions, based on modified starches, work through several specific mechanisms that enhance their effectiveness in food packaging applications. The key advantages of using modified starches in these applications are hydrophobicity, film formation, and biodegradability.

Benefits

  • Effective barrier: Provide a robust OGR barrier on paper packaging using the standard coating machines available at paper mills and converters, while ensuring the integrity of the packaging.
  • Versatility: Suitable for a wide range of packaging applications; from food wraps to carton boards.
  • Enhanced packaging: Cargill™ Barrier Coating solutions improve the overall performance and durability of paper packaging.
  • Biodegradability: Unlike synthetic materials, Cargill™ Barrier Coating solutions are fully biodegradable. They can break down naturally in the environment, and thereby reduce the ecological footprint.

Technical Highlights

Our tests so far, based on three different coating methods (Metering Size Press (MSP), blade coater (jet) and curtain coater) and two different types of paper, showed that the curtain coater consistently provided the best results for both Cargill™ Barrier Coating products. The jet also performed very well, but was slightly less effective than the curtain coater. The MSP revealed some penetration of the applied barrier film. This caused the least favorable results among the three techniques, but might be still sufficient for wrapping grades for medium oil and grease resistance demands (e.g. papers with a short contact to oily materials like wrapped burgers or French fries).

Cargill™ Barrier Coating

Our tests also highlighted that the choice of base paper significantly influenced the effectiveness of the OGR barrier. Papers with smoother surfaces and higher densities generally performed better. Cargill™ Barrier Coating
