Our Position on Deforestation
More than 830 million people go to bed hungry every day. The problem will only become more acute as the world’s population grows at an accelerated rate. To meet this growing demand for food, the world will need to increase food production 13% over the next ten years, with a significant portion of that growth coming from South America.
At the same time, Cargill recognizes that climate change is one of the world’s most complex and urgent challenges. We know we must ensure food security for families around the world, but with less impact on our dwindling natural resources. By prioritizing the protection of our forests and vital ecosystems, Cargill is fostering responsible food production to nourish the populations we serve, protect the environment in which we operate, and uplift the communities and farmers we partner with around the globe for generations to come.
It is within this context that Cargill, in partnership with producers, governments, customers, peers, and NGOs, is stepping up and taking action to help eliminate deforestation and conversion by 2030, and sooner in high-risk biomes.
Cargill’s Commitments:
- Cargill is accelerating its commitment to eliminate deforestation and land conversion from its direct and indirect supply chains in Brazil, Argentina and Uruguay by 2025. This commitment extends to soy, corn, wheat and cotton.
- In line with the Agriculture Sector Roadmap to 1.5°C, Cargill joined signatories in being deforestation-free in the Amazon, Cerrado, and Chaco by 2025.
- Cargill remains committed to deforestation free and achieve no peatland conversion in its palm supply chain globally by 2025.
- Cargill remains committed to achieving deforestation and conversion-free supply chains globally by 2030.
